Dr. Mark Arns joined the University of Arizona Animal Sciences Department as an Associate Professor and Associate Equine Specialist in 2000. His research focuses on equine semen preservation, motility, maturation. Dr. Arns also plays an integral role in equine extension education. He has served as organizer and instructor for the Horseman's Conference, the U of A Equine Nutritional Management Workshops: An Educational Opportunity for Horse Owners and the Equine Reproductive Management School. Dr. Arns teaches undergraduate courses in weanling, yearling and race horse prospect training and also equine reproduction. He also raises and trains his own cutting horses.
Current studies are focused on improving sperm function through modifications of extenders that may alter plasma membrane permeability, thereby reducing the harmful effects associated with short and long term preservation. Studies addressing diet manipulations as a tool to alter plasma membrane composition and function are also underway.
