Community Economics Network Meeting Minutes

August 3, 1998

Announcements

  1. The Network acknowledged Glen Pulver as a newly inducted fellow of the AAEA. Congratulations Glen!
  2. RUPRI is organizing a rural policy analysis conference in New Orleans (Note: Subsequently changed to Santa Fe) in November (11 - 12). Contact Tom Johnson for details.
  3. The Community Development Society recently organized an Extension Section. Network members with an Extension appointment are encouraged to join and inform others with Community Development appointments. The purpose of the section will be to provide functions analogous to agent associations in home economics, youth and agriculture. Community development agents have no national professional association.

Election

Tom Johnson was elected 1998-99 Chair of the CE Network.

Discussion on AAEA Sections

A proposal to form a Community Economics section with no dues passed with no "nay" votes. The Network decided to propose modified bylaws to the AAEA board. George McDowell agreed to draft these bylaws and forward them to the new CE Network chair.

1999 AAEA Principal Paper Proposals

Topics for AAEA sessions were discussed. The following topics and topic leaders were identified.

  1. Mission of Land Grants and rural people. Gerry Campbell, David Debertin, and George McDowell.
  2. Welfare Reform. Shirley Porterfield, Stephan Goetz.
  3. New Governance (finance). Ron Shaffer, George McDowell, Andy Seidl,Todd Gabe.
  4. History of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Tim Wojan, Dave Freshwater.
  5. Tourism-Who Gains and Who Pays? Neil Myer.
  6. Visual Display of Spatial Information. Maureen Kilkenny, Stephan Debertin, Stephan Goetz, Scott Loveridge.
  7. Economic Value versus Economic Impact: A Debate between Environmental and Regional Economists. Leroy Hushak and John Halstead.
  8. Casino$. Todd Gabe, Tom Harris.
