Becky Joy Oil Paintings Exhibited December, 2013

Inspired by the impressionist painters who captured the essence of the light on the landscape, Phoenix oil painter Becky Joy paints from life in her creative trips to the outdoors. After moving from the northwest several years ago to the Arizona desert, she quickly became enamored with the play of light on the subtle colors of the sonoran desert.

In her endeavor to improve as an artist and to 'see' the desert forms and character, she started plein air painting as often as possible. Late afternoon with the setting sun became a favorite time to capture that golden light and the color as it change on the surrounding mountains and vegetation.

Becky will be painting in oils on location at the arboretum on December 10, with a demonstration of her art technique at 10:00 a.m. that's open to the public -- and a 2:00 p.m. 'meet-the-artist' reception for friends, family and guests. Her demonstration will be geared toward all art enthusiasts, visitors that morning are welcome to watch, observe and ask questions as she paints and brings a new work to life before your eyes.

She has exhibited her work in major national shows numerous times and has been invited and accepted to the top plein air events in the country, such as Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and American Women Artists. Her paintings have garnered numerous awards and she has received signature status in several national organizations. Becky's work has been published in several national and international art magazines and two books. She has even written her own book.

"My paintings are what I like to call controlled spontaneity. I'm drawn to the colors of fleeting light on the landscape in sunsets, moonlight and early morning which I try to portray with realistic color. But I will also push the color if it's necessary to convey how I feel about the scene. I paint what excites and inspires me, color combinations, lighting effects, and contrasts in elements, painting in rich, luminous color and expressive, painterly brushwork."

Original paintings in the exhibit will include several large oils four-foot-square, and four-by-five; other works with a range as small as six-by-six inches will be shown, and prints will also be available.
