Gila Community College Student Art
Exhibited July - August, 2009

       Some of the most promising artist students from around Gila County were featured in a multi-media exhibit in the visitor center gallery at Boyce Thompson Arboretum during the months of July and August, 2009.

       "We showed works from the Payson and Gila Pueblo campuses," said Art Department Chairman Larry Brown. "Works ranged from predominantly landscapes, wildlife and also a few figures, portraits and botanicals. These are student works in oils, acrylics, watercolors and various drawing media. Most of the artists are retirees,
students from Globe and Payson. And many of these artists are also amateur photographers, people who draw from their photography for subject
matter."

       As head of the Gila Community College Art Deptartment, Brown has been impressed with the variety of artworks produced by students from Globe and Payson,including works by local painter and pastel artist Ida Padilla. The college is excited about it's new jewelry making, lapidary and digital photography classes being offered this fall at the Globe campus..

        Brown said he may have a work or two of his own in the exhibit, which will be on display from July 18 through August 31. Brown majored in painting and art education at Mesa Community College,
Arizona State University, and completed his graduate work at Northern Arizona University. He earned a Masters Degree in 1991 and has been an art instructor for three decades, most of them at Miami High School. School ties dont end there, in fact he bought, lives in and is in the process of restoring the old Buena Vista School in Miami.          Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located at Highway 60 milepost #223, just three miles west of the town of Superior - a drive of about one hour east of Phoenix or two hours from Tucson (take Oracle Road North to Highway 79 past Florence to Highway 60, then East for another 12 miles).

        Monthly exhibits may be seen in our Visitor Center gallery daily from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during June, July and August. Fall/winter hours 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Arboretum is an Arizona State Park and daily admission must be paid to enter the Visitor Center where the gallery is found. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3 for ages 5-12. Annual memberships at the Arboretum begin at $45, and include a year's access, guest passes for your friends and family, along with many other benefits.
