| UNILEVER CHAIR FOR THE STUDY OF DIET
AND NUTRITION IN THE PREVENTION OF CHRONIC DISEASE, ESTABLISHED AT THE CANCER INSTITUTE OF NEW JERSEY CALL FOR NOMINATIONS New Brunswick, NJ, April 26, 1999 Nutrition research and its impact on chronic diseases received an important boost as the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) today announced the establishment of the Unilever Chair for the Study of Diet and Nutrition in the Prevention of Chronic Disease. The Chair is made possible through a $1.25 million grant from Unilever, one of the worlds largest consumer products companies. The individual appointed to the Unilever Chair will establish dietary methods to combat such chronic diseases as cancer and cardiovascular disease, in addition to educating the public on the latest research. According to the American Cancer Society, dietary factors are responsible for one-third of the 500,000 deaths that occur annually in the United States. Call for Nominations Through the establishment of the Unilever Chair, CINJ will be able to recruit an internationally recognized expert in nutrition research who will lead CINJ and its partner, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in research for disease prevention. The Institute is soliciting nominations to fill the position, which includes being appointed to the faculty within the UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a member of CINJ. Submit nominations for the position to: William N. Hait, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, Unilever Chair Search Committee, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, 195 Little Albany Street, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 08901. Responsibilities for the position include leading a research and educational program based on nutrition and disease prevention and disseminating information on the latest nutrition research nationally and globally. This effort will include laboratory and clinical research, seminars, teaching programs and the development of other resource materials used by many National Cancer Institute and National Institute for Environmental Health Centers throughout the United States. More than ever before, scientists believe that nutrition plays a vital role in the prevention of many diseases and certain kinds of cancer, said William N. Hait, M.D., Ph.D., Director of CINJ. This grant offers us an excellent opportunity to further research and help improve quality of life. Recent research conducted by CINJ has focused on compounds present in such foods as fruits, vegetables, cereal grain and tea and their ability to interfere with the process of cancer development. Widely-consumed these products, for example, contain components called antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect the body from harmful effects of free radicals, which are an unstable, highly reactive form of oxygen that can attack biological molecules. If not controlled, free radicals can damage cells and potentially contribute to diseases such as cancer and heart disease. There are a number of studies in progress designed to establish the link between dietary antioxidants and disease prevention. Supporting the research on the impact food components have on health offers an unprecedented opportunity for Unilever to improve the lives of consumers both here in the United States and globally, said Richard A. Goldstein, President & CEO of Unilever United States and Chairman & CEO of Lipton. The grant also reflects Unilevers commitment to research that can be applied to products that can improve health, not just sustain it products known as functional foods. According to Goldstein, the interest in functional foods is evolving as a result of growing science as well as consumer interest. Health care costs have risen to fourteen percent of the Gross Domestic Product. In addition, the aging baby boomer population is intensifying its interest in holistic health and looking for non-drug alternatives that reduce the risk of chronic disease that many of us will be prone to as we begin to live longer. Established in 1990, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is the state's only National Cancer Institute designated center. It comprises partner institutions including Atlantic Health System (Morristown Memorial Hospital, Overlook Hospital, and Mountainside Hospital), New Brunswick Affiliated Hospitals, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, St. Peter's University Hospital, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; and affiliates including Bayshore Community Hospital, CentraState Healthcare System, Jersey Shore Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, Raritan Bay Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton, and Southern Ocean County Hospital. Cooper Health System and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School are academic affiliates. Unilever is one of the world's largest consumer products companies with sales close to $50 billion. It produces and markets a wide range of foods, home and personal care products. Unilever operates in 88 countries around the globe and employs 267,000 people. In the United States, Unilever sales exceeded $8 billion in 1998. It employs 21,000 people and has 66 offices and manufacturing sites in 23 states. Two of Unilever's 12 global Business Groups are headquartered in the United States. Some of their major products are: Foods - North America: Lipton teas, soups, recipe products and side dishes; Wish-Bone salad dressings; Lawry's seasonings and specialty sauces; Imperial, Promise, Country Crock, I Cant Believe Its Not Butter!, Brummel & Brown spreads and sprays; Ragú pasta and pizza sauces; Five Brothers premium pasta sauces; Klondike, Popsicle and Breyers ice cream products, and Gorton's frozen seafood products.
