Zegarra et al.: Repairing defects prior to reinforcement

Many of the houses in the study had sustained damage, or had inherent structural weaknesses, that needed to be addressed before final reinforcement of the walls. The photo on the left shows slightly eroded walls being cleaned, mostened and sealed with cement mortar. In the photo on the right, the length of the wall and the absence of buttressing required the use of an additional vertical wire mesh strip at the middle point in the wall's length.
