Water efficiency I: Cities

Holden: Figure 6: The household's yard

The lush, attractive yard at 28 Natal Street looks just like any "normal" urban yard; nobody taking a casual or even a closer look would be able to tell that the household members are using a combination of dry sanitation, greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting to grow these plants, nor that this lush effect is being created with far less water use than that of the average household in Johannesburg. As this photo shows, the yard at 28 Natal Street looks just like any "normal" yard; the use of water efficiency practices does not detract in any way from the pleasant scene.
