A Rajasthani woman collects water in an earthen jug from a village stepwell in this photograph As this photograph shows, women will often walk down the steps of a stepwell ("baori") and into the water in order to fill their pitchers. Stepwells are often sited in shady positions, for example, beneath a tree, to keep the water cool during summer.
