More About the Southwestern Bibliography and How to Obtain Documents |
| This bibliography is based on the original
annotated bibliography that contained the research conducted between
1956-1996 on the Beaver Creek Watershed. The 24 subject areas covered in
the orignial bibliography, and the more than 800 references cited, give
some insight into the breadth and diversity of research developed through
the
Beaver Creek Project. The inclusion of references that pertain to
the work in the other vegetation types only adds to the values of this
bibliography.
Because of the unique nature and length of the data sets obtained on Beaver Creek, particularly the hydrologic data, scientists continue to analyze these data to meet new objectives. As a result of the Beaver Creek project, 49 theses and 18 dissertations on a diversity of topics have been produced. In addition, because of the time-lapse since much of the original data were obtained, 20 to 35 years in many cases, additional, up-dated information on plant responses to the treatments is being collected by re-inventorying the original, permanently-located sampling units on the watersheds. Repeated measurement of these inventory locations provides a method of evaluating long-term changes in both managed and un-managed ponderosa pine forests and pinyon-juniper woodlands. The information obtained allows one to look at the nature of long-term ecosystem responses to disturbances, including climatic change, habitat fragmentation, and invasion of exotic species. Most of the documents referenced in the bibliography, both those contained in the original annotated bibliography and those subsequently added, can be found in the Northern Arizona University Library, Special Collections (Beaver Creek Watershed Project), other university libraries, or at the Rocky Mountain Research Station field unit in Flagstaff, Arizona. Included are copies of administrative reports, hand written notes from scientists involved in the research, maps showing location of study plots, and original records of research data. This information is invaluable for continuing long-term evaluations of climate, flora, and fauna of the major forest, woodland, and shrubland types found in the southwestern region of the United States and northern Mexico. (The Madrean Bibliography includes many more references that apply to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The geographical scope of this bibliography is the Madrean Biogeographic Province north of 27° latitude, including the Madream Archipelago region with the southwestern United States. Significant literature from similar ecosystems on adjacent areas has been included in the compilation of this bibliography, because of the significant ecological overlap). To borrow any of the documents in this bibliography, contact the Inter Library Loan office of your local library. Give the complete information on the document that the bibliography provides and that the information came from this web site. Photocopies of a few scarce documents are held by the Arid Lands Information Center -- these are marked with an asterisk after the title. The charge for photocopies is 20 cents per page.
