Stanley M. Alcorn Memorial Scholarship Endowment Stanley M. Alcorn grew up in the orchards of a family farm in California. In his mid-thirties, already a plant pathologist (Ph.D. Berkeley, 1954), he assumed its management which continued until his own unexpected death in 1999. He never missed a harvest, even when it meant taking leave from the Army Air Corp, or later while a Professor at the University of Arizona (1963–1989). All his life, he valued the practical magic of agriculture and worked to develop in his beloved students—and sons—this same love and respect. His academic career included among many areas of interest work in disease of peaches and cotton, but also of saguaros and bio-oil producing plants. But he loved teaching as well as research and his students, fanned out all over the the world, kept him apprised of their work. Even in retirement he invited visits and reviewed projects in the U.S., the Middle East, Australia, and Africa. Friends and family of Dr. Alcorn hope that the scholarship endowed in his name will allow students who are as excited as he was by the possibilities, to further advance understanding and progress in the plant sciences.
