Research

Dr. Matthias has expertise in the development and testing of field methods for assessing energy and mass fluxes at the soil-atmosphere interface.  He has worked especially on the design and evaluation of enclosure (chamber) techniques deployed at the soil surface for measurement of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and other mass fluxes within terrestrial ecosystems.  His early publications were among the first to report on the accuracy and precision of mass flux measurements by enclosure techniques.  He has assessed how deployment of an enclosure over the soil surface affects the soil environment beneath the enclosure and the measurement of the mass flux under study.  Dr. Matthias is experienced in the measurement of various trace gas concentrations using gas chromatography and other techniques.  He has also worked extensively on the application of the eddy covariance, micro-lysimeter, and sap flow gauge techniques for energy and mass flux measurement over the land surface.
