RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Aquaculture
and Aquatic Ecology
Water quality and management of riparian areas and managed systems (e.g.
wetlands and aquaculture) in arid regions is of increasing importance with
current rates of population growth and water usage. The majority of this
research in the Aquaculture and Aquatic Ecology program is performed at
the Environmental Research Laboratory. Current research topics include:
- Seaweed
aquaculture, seaweed and fish polyculture, seawater terrestrial crops
(halophytes), shrimp aquaculture, freshwater fish, nutrient recovery
systems, nuisance aquatic plants, and algae characterization in natural
and manmade aquatic systems (Glenn, Fitzsimmons, and Nelson (adjunct).
- ERL
projects on wetland and riparian vegetation mapping along the Colorado
River system in the U.S. and Mexico.
- Research
on the use of wetlands to reclaim wastewater (Gerba)
- A strong shrimp pathology and general aquaculture program is maintained by Don Lightner in the Department of Veterinary Science and Microbiology
