COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES
CAREER DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT PROGRAM

In assessing the effectiveness of the Classified Staff Training Policy in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), the Staff Development Team identified the need for additional funding beyond the $50 available from individual units under the basic training policy. Funding was clearly a barrier to career development for some staff. Training in specialized areas costs much more than $50 but can greatly enhance a person's performance. Such job-related development activities will also benefit the unit and college.

In order to expand the amount of funding available to classified staff for career development, the team developed the Career Development Support Program, which was approved by CALS Executive Council.

INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

  • All non-probationary classified staff .5FTE or above in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona are eligible to apply.
  • Any career development activity that is clearly job related and will benefit the unit and/or college will be considered.
  • Staff are eligible for funding once every three years.
  • Funding will come half from the college and half from the unit.
  • Currently the maximum funding available from the college is $250 with the expectation of a departmental match. Departments may contribute more than $250 if they choose.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • An official signed Application for Career Development Support must be submitted.
  • All applications will be reviewed by CALS STAFF COUNCIL.
  • CALS Executive Council will consider the council's recommendations and make the final determination on the amount of the award.
  • Allow enough time for processing. It usually takes 30 days to determine if and how much funding will be approved. Per UA policies, some items must be reimbursed after a class or program has been completed.
