GOAL
Partners For Life: A Service Dog's Tale is a 7½-minute video that portrays service dogs and their partners in real-life situations. It's goal—to educate employees in all commercial areas such as airlines, hotels, land transportation, restaurants, grocery and retail stores, as well as all types of government and educational institutions.
HISTORY
The video began two years ago, October 1997, as a project of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Diversity Committee. One partner and member of the committee, who uses a service dog to perform her job as a pesticide trainer, shared her story about her sudden and almost overnight hearing loss. From that moment on the committee began researching and comparing other available materials and the often struggling process of securing funding for production and distribution of this unique video.
In early October 1999 and with the support of several sponsors (the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Executive Council, the National 4-H Council, the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, the University of Arizona Animal Care unit, and the University of Arizona Diversity Action Council) the committee went forward with a budget of $4,000 and began video production. By December 1999, the finished product was shipped to Phoenix for the first run of 300 copies.
CURRENT EVENTS
On January 19, 2000, a "roll out news conference" was held at the University of Arizona Foundation Building to highlight the video and introduce it to the community. Guests of various news media groups, "stars" from the video, members of the CALS Diversity Committee and other officials joined the presentation and first public screening of the video. The premiere was a success and orders have been coming in from California to Pennsylvania. Click here to see the news article from the January 21 edition of the Arizona Daily Wildcat.
NEXT STEPS
The continuing mission of the committee will be to not only distribute and sell copies of the video nationwide, but to use those funds to create a series of related videos and materials to further the mission of service dog awareness in all types of communities and organizations in the U.S.
