Training Classes for
Animal Feeding Operations

Who: The target audience is all Arizona
dairies and feedlots
What: This two-part class will help
you to determine if you have the capacity to contain all process
water and the 25-year, 24-hour storm water, as required by state
and federal regulations.
When: It is a two-part class. In order
to benefit from the class, both must be attended.
Part 1: July 24, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m.
Part 2: August 14, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m.
Where: Maricopa Agricultural Center,
Maricopa, Arizona (directions below)
How: Fax or mail the attached registration
to NRCS by July 10, 2002 to save a space. Priority will be given
to Animal Feeding Operations.
Part 1 of the training will include presentations
on the following topics:
- State and Federal water quality regulations,
including the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
(NPDES) general permit for Arizona CAFOs.
- Components of an animal waste management
system and a Best Management Practices Plan
- Collecting data to determine containment
needs
- Reading maps: topographical maps, soil
survey maps, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maps,
storm maps
- Goals and other considerations to consider
during the planning process
Most of part 2 will be spent discussing your
particular operation and the data you collected between the two
classes with experts from the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation
Services. NOTE: The information discussed in the class that is specific
to an operation will not be shared with the regulatory authorities.
The University of Arizona - Cooperative Extension,
the Arizona Department of Agriculture, and the Arizona Department
of Environmental Quality will assist NRCS in providing this training.

to MAC
To MAC From Phoenix
Heading south on I-10, exit
at the Queen Creek exit (Exit #164). Turn right. You are now traveling
south on the Maricopa Highway. Proceed past Riggs Road (there is
a signal at this intersection) to Casa Blanca Road (approx. 5 miles).
In the center of the highway there is a green & white sign:
UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA/MARICOPA AG. CENTER. Turn left. Go east approx.
1.5 miles to another green & white sign (right side of road).
Turn right (actual name for the road is Secate Road) on the dirt
road and continue south for approx. 3 miles to Smith-Enke Road (there
will be a white concrete pipe with a block "A" on it). Turn left
to the main building; the Bartley Cardon Administration Building.
To MAC From Tucson
Take I-10 North and exit on Chandler/Gilbert/Sacaton
exit (Exit #175). You will make a wide loop to the first stop sign.
Turn right and go over the freeway. At the next intersection, turn
right. This will be Casa Blanca Road/Bapchule. Continue west on
Casa Blanca road for approx. 8 miles to the green & white sign:
U of A/Maricopa Ag. Center. Turn left onto the dirt road and continue
south for approx. 3 miles to Smith-Enke Road.
From Yuma to MAC
Go east on I-8 and exit on Exit #151. Go the
Maricopa Highway and travel north through the town of Maricopa to
Smith-Enke Road (approx. 1 mile of Maricopa). There will be a green
& white sigh; U of A/Maricopa Ag. Center right before you get
to Smith-Enke Rd. Turn right and proceed approx. 3.5 miles to the
Bartley Cardon Administration Building.
