Dr. John Smith comes to the University of Arizona from the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University where he served as Extension Specialist, Dairy Science; he also served as the Dairy Commodity Group leader in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industries.
In 2000 Dr. Smith was awarded the Midwest Outstanding Young Extension Specialist Award, in 2002 the DeLaval Dairy Extension Award, in 2008 he was selected as Western Dairy Business Magazine's Outstanding Dairy Industry Educator/Researcher and in 2010 Dr. Smith was recognized with the Bell Tower of Fame Award for his efforts in dairy education and research.
His interests include cow comfort, heat stress, milking parlor performance, special needs facilities and management of expanding dairies. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in housing and management systems for dairy cows and is considered a world expert in the area of cooling dairy cows and dairy facilities construction. He is a Co-Founder of the Western Dairy Management Conference and High Plains Dairy Management Conference. Dr. Smith works throughout the United States and internationally assisting producers with the development of efficient dairy operations.
