Distinguishing Characteristics: This small deciduous tree grows to heights of about 10 to 20 feet. It is usually multi-trunked. The leaves are single, heart shaped and dark green in color. The uniqueness of this tree lies in its gorgeous reddish-pink to purple flowers that form in clusters along the entire branches and trunk. This “cauliflory” formation makes this tree a striking attraction during its blooming period in the spring.

Natural History and Cultivation Notes: The species name comes from the tree's Chinese origin.

Ethnobotany: This tree is planted almost exclusively as an ornamental in landscapes and along streets and highways.
