Natural History and Cultivation Notes: This tree is mainly cultivated for its aesthetic properties, especially its brilliant flowers. It provides a very tropical feel to any landscape. There are several named varieties. The trunk is notable for its knob-like projections which develop as the tree ages. The source of this tree'’s common name comes from the pear shaped seed pods that follow the flowers. They are full of many seeds embedded in silky white floss.

Ethnobotany: The silky white floss has been used to stuff cushions and life vests.
