Native Habitat: Low deserts often in the partial shade of cacti or shrubs

Growth Habit: Evergreen bush with leafless stems

Flowering: Orange slipper-shaped flowers

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a plant that is recently introduced into southwestern landscaping. It is highly drought resistant, but will perform better if watered during the late spring and summer. It is hardy to about -1 to -5 °C. Its red flowers are in the shape of a slipper, which is the source for its common name. Related to poinsettia.
