![]() Populus brandegeei
Common Name(s): Guerigo, White Bark Cottonwood
Synonym(s):
Family: Salicaceae
Native To: Southern Baja California and east-central Sonora
Native Habitat: Prefers moist to wet soils
Growth Habit: Large tree
Flowering: Inconspicuous
Distinguishing Characteristics: It is fast growing and becomes a rather large tree. It is broad-leafed and quite green with characteristic white bark; the inspiration for its common name. This characteristic enables it to be used as a substitute for aspens in hot areas where the aspens do not tolerate the heat and the aspen effect is desired for an area. Native to wet areas, all cottonwoods and willows (same family) consume high amounts of both surface water and ground water. Thus, they are not too appropriate for desert landscapes.
