Natural History and Cultivation Notes: The Spanish name for Cottonwood is Alamo. Great for a shade tree, or for adding a lush green feel to a bright landscape. However this tree does consume a lot of water, so it is not for the common xeriscape. Due to their high water intake and their fast growth properties, these trees have rather soft wood. Breakage is common as they get older. They become brittle and hold up poorly to high winds and other stresses.
