Natural History and Cultivation Notes: Due to the showy flowers this shrub is popular in landscaping in the urban southwest. There are two subspecies available: T. stans stans, with broad leaflets shown here, and T. stans angustifolia, with narrow leaflets.
Ethnobotany: The species has been used for many purposes in herbal medicine. These include treatments for diabetes and digestive problems. Extracts from the leaves have been found to inhibit certain types of yeast infections. Also, it contains several compounds that are known for their catnip-like effects on felines.
