Natural History and Cultivation Notes: As is denoted by the common name, this tree’s bark is its most notable feature. It is accented by a variety of different colors among the layers of the bark, giving a mottled almost camouflage’ exfoliating pattern. It is a fast growing tree often used for a street tree or a lawn tree. It is resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Seedlings can be variable, so that a group of trees may show different characteristics. According to some sources there are over 20 cultivars. Sometimes foliage will turn shades of yellow, red and purple making it a very attractive winter tree.
