Natural History and Cultivation Notes: This is a tough plant that is drought resistant and easy to grow. It is showy and effective either as a centerpiece in a landscape or as a shrub border if kept pruned to shrub size. Deciduous. Its flowers are beautiful, ranging from cream through bright blue. It is bee pollinated. The palmately-compound leaves have a characteristic smell and some medicinal use.

Ethnobotany: The seeds have a slight peppery taste and can be used for seasoning, hence the common name Monk'’s Pepper Tree. This plant has also recently been noted for its insect repelling properties as well.
