Note

The Chair of the SAC has enjoyed working with WAS Students, the Board and the Excom since 1997 and feels it is time to pass the torch to a new coordinator.  The new person selected should have demonstrated commitment to student issues, not just be a good teacher.  It would be beneficial if the new chair also has the expertise to facilitate getting the student materials onto the WAS web page as this is the major portal through which students around the globe can realize the substantial benefits of their membership in the Society.

Electronic Networking

Although Student page materials were sent to the administrator last year, they are not posted on the WAS site.  The Committee had excellent and constructive discussion.  Essentially, the SAC’s recommendation is to provide a means for the Student Pages to be set up and maintained remotely by a knowledgeable member of the SAC and maintained on that member’s institutional server.  This follows the model of the WAS Employment Service page and would only require a link from the WAS home page.  The pages (html code) exist already through the prior efforts of Rex Caffee.  The most obvious candidate to charge with posting and frequently updating the Student Pages is the new Chair of the SAC.  When a student page again comes available, the contents should include at a minimum:

a)     the Comprehensive Student Policy

b)     detailed information on the Pre-Conference and Best Paper/Poster Student Awards programs

c)     calendar

d)     membership information

e)     student spotlight

f)      issues forum

g)     planned student activities at the annual meeting

h)     planned student activities at other (regional / Chapter) WAS meetings.

Awards

The student awards process has been streamlined and facilitated by making a “Judging Book” available at the WAS booth during the annual conference.  This year, the book will be prepared jointly by the Honors & Awards Chair and the USAS as directed by the Excom.  Because the student pages are not available on the WAS web site, little communication occurred regarding what awards are to be made and how to implement student awards (Pre-conference and Best Presentation).  This problem would be remedied substantially by making the Comprehensive Student Policy and other student web pages available to WAS members.

Activities

For the past two domestic meetings, a Special Session entitled "Aquaculture as a Career" has been offered with much acclaim.

Conclusion

The Committee welcomes additional suggestions, comments, and discussion from the Board regarding the activities listed above.

Respectfully submitted February 2001 - Bonnie L. Brown, Chair Student Activities
