The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum located in Superior, Arizona, with an expected start date of July 1, 2008. The Arboretum, established in 1925, is managed under an agreement between the University of Arizona, Arizona State Parks and Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, a private nonprofit corporation, which owns the physical facility. The tripartite management seeks to maintain an appropriate balance between the public programs and academic endeavors. The Arboretum is primarily a service-oriented institution seeking to ascertain the types of plants that will thrive within the Sonoran Desert; displaying these and introducing them for use within the state and the Southwest; making seeds available to botanical gardens, arboreta, parks departments and government agencies; and offering a wide range of educational services dealing with plant science and biotic communities.

Candidates must be exceptionally qualified individuals with strong management experience and demonstrated abilities of leadership, organization, commitment, enthusiasm, creativity and vision necessary to ensure that the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers work together in collaborative effort to accomplish the mission of the Boyce Thompson Southwest Arboretum. The new Director will be based in Superior, Arizona.

Duties and Responsibilitities
*Serve at the direction of and communicate with the BTSWA Board of Directors.
*Serve as the chief executive and chief spokesperson for the Arboretum.
*Annually establish an operating budget for review and approval by the Board of Directors. Continually review and monitor the budget, income and expenditures to keep all expenditures within the budget.
*Supervise all personnel and participate in/review all staff evaluations.
*Provide leadership and oversight for all Arboretum programs.
*Design and develop fund raising strategies for operating and capital needs, with responsibility for solicitation of individual, foundation and corporate donors.
*Write selected grants and review all outgoing grant applications.
*Serve as an ex-oficio member of the Board of Directors and all operating committees.
Minimum Qualifications
* Applicant must possess a minimum of a Masters degree in an appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications
*Senior level administrative experience in a related or similar type of organization.
*Ability to oversee and support research efforts of the Arboretum.
*Demonstrated fund raising experience and ability.
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Sales Assistant (On-Call)

This position is located at Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, Arizona. This position is responsible for collecting admission and membership fees and selling, stocking, and inventorying merchandise in the retail center at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Duties and Responsibilities include
* Assists customers in locating merchandise and answering a variety of questions concerning general merchandise
* Stocks shelves, counters or tables with merchandise; keeps merchandise orderly and neat in appearance
* Totals prices and tax on merchandise selected by customer using a computerized cash register; accepts payment following established procedures for different types of transactions; makes change; issues sales receipts; calculates discounts when appropriate
* Counts and balances cash register and receipts
* Stamps or attaches price tags on merchandise and/or checks tagged prices to verify accuracy referring to price list
* Checks inventory periodically to obtain reorder information to replenish stock; informs designated staff member of needs or places orders with outside sales representative within established limits
*Checks inventory listing with actual inventory on shelf and reports discrepancies to supervisor.
* Sets up promotional displays; makes signs or arranges merchandise on counters or tables to promote sales.
* Cleans shelves, counters or tables.
* Operates state vehicle to pick up or drop off merchandise. Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* Six months of experience in sales and stocking merchandise; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
* Skill in meeting and dealing with the public and customer service techniques.
* Ability to effectively communicate.
