NOVEMBER 21, SATURDAY - STAR NIGHT ASTRONOMY PARTY WITH THE EAST VALLEY ASTRONOMY CLUB (limit of 150)
Our popular "Star Night" astronomy party barbecue and potluck returns November 21, Saturday, when the East Valley Astronomy Club brings their telescopes to the Arboretum -- and our members bring potluck dishes to share. This popular fundraiser is among our most frequently requested members-only events; plan for an enjoyable night of socializing, recipe-sharing -- and stargazing. BTA Members may pre-pay for themselves and up to four guests, nonmembers included, at $5 each. To assure variety with our potluck, annual members with last names ending with the letters A through M should bring a main course dish or casserole; those with last names N through Z are asked to bring a salad or dessert.
Pre-registration and prepayment are required, call soon to add your names to our list for this event. Call Membership Coordinator Lorrie Polleyat 520-689-2723.

In June we drove up to Signal Peak in the Pinal Mountains and in July our destination was Aztec Peak in the Sierra Anchas. Spaces are limited to a dozen passengars and this is only open to BTA "Friends-of-the-Arboretum" annual members. Read about our June and July Jeep Club Trips.

DATE "TO BE ANNOUNCED" QUEEN CREEK CANYON HIKE WITH ASU PROFESSOR STEVE SEMKEN (limit of 20 participants)
The rocks exposed in Queen Creek Canyon, five miles east of the Arboretum, have much in common with those exposed in the Grand Canyon. The geology
records a significant portion of the evolution of Arizona and the Southwest, and was the site of some of the earliest mining activity in the Superior area. Queen Creek Canyon is a place where ASU professors frequently bring geology students for field education. It is also magnificently scenic, a fact better appreciated when one is trekking along on foot rather than speeding through on US Highway 60! "Friends of the Arboretum" annual members are invited to learn more on a two-hour guided hike with ASU Associate Professor of Geology, Steve Semken. This guided hike is only open to Friends-of-the-Arboretum annual members (Dr. Semken is one!), and limited to the first 20 people who sign up. There's no charge -- to be on the list call our gift shop staff at 520-689-2723. We'll rendezvous at 1:00 p.m. at the Arboretum, then carpool to a pullout in the Canyon. We will walk alongside the highway (safely away from traffic) down to the mouth of the Canyon and back. The hike will end around 3:00 pm. The total distance is about one mile: not strenuous, but the first half is downhill and the second half is uphill. Wear solid hiking or walking shoes and a hat; use sunscreen; and carry water. At times we will be walking beneath high walls where falling rocks can be a hazard, so we will supply hard hats to all participants, and these must be worn at all times.
DATE / TIME : TO BE ANNOUNCED
How many: Maximum of 20
Cost: free to annual members
What to bring: hard hats must be worn and will be provided, sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, water.

Read more about Steve at http://semken.asu.edu. Spaces are limited to 20 participants; sign up for this tour by calling 520-689-2723 and ask for Lorrie Polley -- or email Lorrie Polley.
