Prints of Southwest Flora and Fauna Exhibited April 2011
A wide array of techniques and styles, from open-bite intaglio etchings to collagraph, silkscreen, and even photo-polymer gravure showcase Prints of Flora and Fauna of the Southwest art by students from West Campus Pima County College printmaking class and a printmaking class from Central Arizona College from Signal Peak Campus during April. This exhibit in the Boyce Thompson Arboretum Visitor Center Gallery continues through Saturday, April 30.
"These are works by students in the both printmaking departments of Pima Community College's West campus in Tucson and also the Coolidge campus of Central Arizona College," said Professor David Andre's. "We are proud to exhibit these prints by faculty and selected students, many of our students are established artists with degrees from other universities, who are studying advanced techniques with PCC and CAC."
More than a dozen faculty and students have works in the exhibit. Instructor and exhibit coordinator Andre's said original framed prints and also unframed prints will be available for purchase ranging from $35 to $500 for framed works and $20 to $350 for unframed. Purchases are encouraged; participating artists donate a percentage back to Boyce Thompson Arboretum to help support botanical education and conservation programs. "These Flora and Fauna prints were chosen to exhibit the many talents of our students and staff, and also to educate the viewer about traditional and also experimental processes that are taught at each campus," said Andre's. Faculty and students artists participating include Jo Anderson, Marika Sizabo, Christine Dawdy, Phyllis Wagoner, Martha Wilson, Julia Andre's, Susan Ramos, Maria Lee, Christina McNearney and David Andre's.
"This exhibit offers viewers a chance to see works done with well-known techniques such as intaglio, a process using aquatints that are etched with acids into zinc or copper plates. We will also have relief printmaking on linocut and wood which is the oldest printmaking process known to mankind! And most people are familiar with the word "silkscreen," but they may not realize that it refers to an artwork created when areas are blocked out to reveal an image, then ink is squeegee'd through the screen. Our exhibition will offer a chance to become familiar with many different styles of printmaking," said Andre's.
Boyce
Thompson Arboretum is located at Highway 60 milepost #223, just three miles
west of the town of Superior - a drive of about one hour east of Phoenix or
two hours from Tucson (take Oracle Road North to Highway 79 past Florence
to Highway 60, then East for another 12 miles). Monthly exhibits may be seen
at our Visitor Center gallery daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during April, and then Summertime hours move to a 6:00 a.m. opening and 3:00 p.m. closing hour for May June,
July and August.
The Arboretum
is an Arizona State Park and daily admission must be paid to enter the Visitor
Center where the gallery is found. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3 for
ages 5-12. Annual memberships at the Arboretum begin at $45, and include a
year's access, guest passes for your friends and family, along with many other
benefits. A membership may be purchased in the gift shop on the day of your
visit.
