UofA CATTS Fellows Alumni

Our 2006-2007 Academic Year CATTS Fellows...

Katie’s interests include vegetation management, water sustainability, spatial analysis and environmental education.  Outside of academics, Katie enjoys country music, outdoor insanity, cooking, running marathons, traveling and all kinds of other adventuresome merriment. Katy will be working with the UA Dept. of Geosciences—Students Across Borders and the Master Watershed Steward Programs.

Brenae is from Laramie, Wyoming and has a background in math and astrophysics. She has studied star formations and has a passion for x-ray sources in dwarf galaxies. How cool is that! She was also a  Peace Corp Volunteer in Botswana and loves reading science fiction, hiking and international folk dancing! She will be working with the NOAO/Astronomy Project.

Brenae Bailey—Graduate Fellow

Marianne  is working with the Water Education Program for Southern Arizona and Tucson Water. Her focus is on Urban Sustainability which involves Arizona's Growing Smarter Guiding Principles to be developed by a governor appointed council which will help to make recommendations to enhance platforms of sustainability. Marianne also enjoys outdoor activities such as backpacking, traveling, and skiing.

Michelle Gamber—Graduate Fellow

As a CATTS fellow in the Biotechnology in the Classroom project, Mohammed hopes to inspire students to the immense opportunities scientific research has to offer. Mohammed’s background is in the area of neurobiology. He is currently studying Physiological Studies and researches the role of glia-dependent axon sorting in the developing olfactory system in the Hawk moth. Mohammed will be working with the biotech BIO5 Project

 

Mohammed Abdelwahab—Undergraduate Fellow

Michelle’s focal area is the areas of epidemiology/biostatistics and she comes to us from the Department of Anthropology and the College of Public Health where she researches emerging diseases in various populations. She enjoys horseback riding, playing soccer, and waterskiing and will be working with Tree of Life WEB Project

Insects and teaching are Chris’s two main passions, but she’s got more interests than we can count. She loves to cook and  loves art, and even finds time to pursue a variety of artistic endeavors, namely relief printmaking, metalwork, photography, artist’s books, and journaling. Her research is on giant water bugs...awesome! And she will be working with the TUSD Cooper Environmental Campus!

Chris Goforth— Graduate Fellow

Lora joins us from Taos, New Mexico and is all about Microbiology at the University of Arizona. Her graduate research has consisted of a wide variety of subjects including tap water filtration, T cell development, and molecular pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  .  Her passion is in Immunology and she is interested in how the body fights off infection and hopes  her research  will provide many medical breakthroughs in the future. She will be working with the Biotechnology in the Classroom  - BIO5 Project .

Arin is from Atlanta, Georgia and loves to travel and play outside! She says its because she's a fire sign (Aries) who is drawn to water but really it’s her background in Environmental Science and International Studies. Her research has taken her around the world. She has studied in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef  and is currently working on a biocomplexity project related to Marine Protected Areas in the Bahamas but her heart is still in the Sonoran Desert. Arin will be working with the UA Dept. of Geosciences Students Across Borders and the Master Watershed Steward Programs as she pursues a PhD in Arid Lands and Global Change.

Arin Haverland—Graduate Fellow

Mark, “a science educator gone snowbird” left Boston to study conservation biology in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Arizona. His thesis research focuses on factors influencing winter residency of western burrowing owls. He hopes one day to work for a non profit organization which focuses on -based conservation of threatened wildlife. Mark will be working with the Gear Up Project.

Kristen is from the  Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

department. Her love for science education developed through experiences as a cave guide, Ithaca  Sciencenter volunteer, "featured creature" researcher, teaching assistant, and Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute volunteer and  she  looks forward to sharing her excitement for bugs and biology through the CATTS Insect Discovery Program!

 

Kristen Potter - Graduate Fellow

Besides his academic studies in applied mathematics,  Joseph is an avid rock climber and musician. Touring the country playing rock music several times was just one of his more memorable learning experiences. He has  been to almost all the states this way. Joseph is  just starting to competitively climb at the local level and is  improving his skill continually while maintaining his goal in life which is to have some sort of positive impact on the world...all this and a PhD in mathematics too! Joseph will be working with the City High Math Project.

 

Mark, also known as Mr. Trees has the coolest last name in the bunch but we still don’t know his favorite food or his favorite color, so you will have to check the website soon to find out...Mark will be working with the Tucson Unified School District Cooper Environmental Campus

Qadri, whose name translates to Night of Power was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He arrived in Tucson a few years ago after an amazing journey. He has 6 younger siblings and has experienced so many great things including competitive swimming and martial arts.  Qadri now studies Molecular Cellular Biology and Business Management. Qadri will be working with the Miles Exploratory Learning Center

Christine is from Adairville, KY (population 1000) and studying climate and tree-rings in the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. She is looking at the influence of elevation, aspect, and climate on tree
