Improvement of Cherry Tomato Fruit Yield and Quality Under a Controlled Environment

Industry supporter:  Mr. Dave Shaver (Desert Glory)
Johann S. Buck, M.S., Plant Sciences

Applying a nutrient solution with high EC has been a common commercial practice to improve fruit quality of cherry tomato.  However, rapid yield reduction associated with continuous high salinity stress to the plants is considered as problematic.  The objective of this experiment is to determine whether manipulating the drip EC can sustain quality attributes (Brix %, acidity, fruit firmness), while maintaining yield especially later in the crop season. Two selected cultivars are examined and grown hydroponically with three separate EC treatments.  The EC treatments consist of a low EC, high EC and a combination of high EC or low EC. Future trials include manipulation of EC according to plant responses and greenhouse environments to provide a more precise and effective application of EC treatment.
