Design and Construction of a Food Growth Chamber for the Amundson-Scott New South Pole Station

Supporters:  Primary contract Raytheon Polar Services, Raytheon Corporation;
Sub-Contract:  Mr. Phil Sadler, Sadler Machine Company
Dr. Gene Giacomelli, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

The National Science Foundation required that the new South Pole research station include a Food Growth Chamber for fresh vegetable crops that will provide an appropriate level of advanced technology, which a volunteer staff could operate.  The purpose for including the FGC is the psychological effect for satisfying the diet of the station personnel, as well as, their visual and sensory needs for seeing, feeling, and interacting with plants.  This project has resulted in the design, construction, testing, and delivery of a Food Growth Chamber (FGC) to Raytheon Corporation Polar Services Group by the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ in collaboration with Sadler Machine Company, Tempe, AZ. The FGC consists of two sections, the Plant Production room (PR) and the Enviro-room (ER).
