| DR JOEL CUELLO: Associate Professor Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering 507 Shantz Building Tucson, AZ 85721 Phone: 520.621.7757 Fax: 520.621.3963 Dr. Cuello’s research is focused on the application of engineering design and principles in optimizing the performance of biological systems. His collaborative research projects, sponsored by DOE, NASA and USDA, among others, are divided into two major thrusts: Biological Engineering and Controlled-Environment Engineering. Controlled-Environment Engineering. Concentrations are for both Earth and Space applications of (1) design and mass/energy-balance analyses of novel lighting systems, including hybrid solar-electric lighting systems, light-emitting diode arrays, and water-cooled high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps; (2) controlled-environment plant production systems, including hydroponics, tissue culture, organ culture and somatic embryogenesis; and (3) modeling of energy impact of lighting systems, hydroponic nutrient dynamics, etc. Dr. Joel Cuello teaches ABE 485/585 Engineering Biological Processes. Biological Engineering: Concentrations are on (1) design and scale up of bioreactor systems for chemical production from microbial and plant cells, treatment of microbial and viral pathogens, and sequestration of carbon dioxide by algal cultures; and (2) bio-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) and nanoelctromechanical systems (NEMs), focusing on biomolecule-surface interactions. jcuello@ag.arizona.edu Click here for a photo and a link to the GRAPHIC VERSION of Dr. Joel Cuello's profile.
