Biomass and Quality Evaluation of Basil in a Retractable Shade Structure in Semi-Arid Climate

Jennifer Nelkin, M.S. Plant Sciences

This project explores the feasibility of producing culinary herbs in a retractable roof greenhouse under semi-arid climate conditions. Two cultivars of basil, ‘Genovese’ and ‘Purple Ruffles’ and Lemon Grass have been evaluated under several production regimes, including rockwool culture and peat-based media in containers. A retractable roof greenhouse with both 50% shade and 35% shade has been compared against traditional field production. Yield analysis and quality are being compared among environments, cultural treatments and cultivars. Currently, the study is continuing to evaluate ‘Genovese Compact’ basil as well as Thyme and Violas under the three environments using raised peat beds as well as Verti-Gro towers. These systems are popular methods for culinary herb production and will be evaluated in terms of yield and quality and an economic analysis.
