DESCRIPTION: PORTABLE TRI-FOLD DISPLAY BOARD

PROBLEM

AS VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO NEED SUPPORT THROUGH PUBLIC RELATIONS, WE MUST MAKE A CONSCIENTIOUS EFFORT TO INFORM THE PUBLIC WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THE CLASSROOM. AFTER ATTENDING SEVERAL CONFERENCES DURING THE PAST YEAR, I REALIZED THAT PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A MUCH GREATER UNDERSTANDING/APPRECIATION FOR OUR AQUACULTURE PROGRAM IF I  PROVIDED THEM WITH VISUALS. NOT ALWAYS HAVING ACCESS TO A VCR AT CONFERENCES, I DECIDED TO LOOK INTO PURCHASING A PHOTO DISPLAY BOARD -YOU'VE SEEN THEM, THE ONES THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS AND EXTENSION OFFICES USE. THE PROBLEM IS THE COST OF THESE BOARDS RANGES FROM $300 TO $900 DEPENDING ON THE SIZE.

SOLUTION

AFTER LOOKING AT ONE OF THE DISPLAY BOARDS IN A CATALOG, I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I COULD PROBABLY BUILD ONE CHEAPER AND MAKE IT PORT ABLE FOR ONE PERSON -AN ADV ANT AGE THE LARGER BOARDS DON'T OFFER. THE WHOLE TRI-FOLD BOARD, WHICH WILL EASILY.

FIT ON A STANDARD 72" CLASSROOM TABLE, WAS LESS THAN $30 TO BUILD. IN ADDITION TO BEING GREAT FOR CONFERENCES, IT WORKS WONDERS AT FAIRS, SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS, AND FOR CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. IT IS EASY TO SET UP AND TAKE DOWN. JUST UNDO THE HOOKS, UNFOLD, AND ATTACH YOUR PICTURES TO THE VELCRO (OR MAGNETIC STRIP IF YOU PREFER). BEST OF ALL, WHEN I'M TRYING TO EXPLAIN A RE-CIRCULATING AQUACULTURE SYSTEM TO AN AMATEUR, I NO LONGER HAVE TO EXPLAIN IN GREAT DETAIL THAT YES, AN EXCELCIER COOLER PAD IS CAPABLE OF CATCHING ALL THAT FISH DOO-DOO. I CAN WHIP OUT THE DISPLAY BOARD AND SHOW THEM THE FOUL MUCK CLINGING DESPERATELY TO THAT TRUSTY COOLER PAD.

DESCRIPTION: AQUACULTURE ON A BUDGET FOR SCHOOL AND SAE

PROBLEM

BECAUSE OF THE CROSS CURRICULAR IMPLICATIONS IN BOTH SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS, MANY TEACHERS HA YE EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN AQUACULTURE, BUT CANNOT COME UP WITH SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO PURCHASE TURN-KEY TANKS FROM CATALOGS. ADDITIONALLY, MOST STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE HIGH DOLLARS TO START AN AQUACULTURE ENTERPRISE AS AN SAE. HAVING BUILT OUR OWN J LARGE SCALE FACILITY, I REALIZED THAT THERE IS ALSO A NEED FOR SMALL SCALE PRODUCTION WHICH CAN STILL REINFORCE ALL THE SKILLS --ONLY WITHOUT THE HIGH CAPITAL COSTS AND LABOR.

SOLUTION

THERE ARE MANY DESIGNS YOU CAN FIGURE OUT ONCE YOU GET GOING, BUT I BELIEVE THAT EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING TWO WlLL MEET MOST OF YOUR SMALL SCALE NEEDS. THE FIRST IS A 210 GALLON RE-CIRCULATING SYSTEM YOU CAN PLACE IN YOUR SHOP OR ON YOUR PATIO. THIS SYSTEM WILL RUN YOU LESS THAN $300 UTILIZING A PLASTIC TANK, AND WILL PAY FOR ITSELF THE FIRST YEAR IF YOU ARE RAISING TROPICALS. YOU CAN UTILIZE THE SYSTEM FOR FOOD FISH PRODUCTION, ESPECIALLY TILAPIA IF YOU HAVE WARM WATER, ALTHOUGH YOUR RETURNS ON YOUR INVESTMENT WILL NOT BE ANYWHERE NEAR WHAT YOU CAN MAKE OFF OF TROPICALS. THE SAME PRODUCTION PRINCIPLES APPLY EITHER WAY, SO YOUR STUDENTS WILL HAVE A SOUND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE REGARDLESS OF THE SIZE OF FISH.

THE SECOND SYSTEM IS A RE-CIRCULATING POND BUILT TO YOU OR YOUR STUDENT'S DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS UTILIZING CAGE CULTURE, AND IS ONLY SLIGHTLY SUITABLE FOR TILAPIA AND CATFISH PRODUCTION. THE FILTRATION SYSTEM IS ONLY SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE RE-CIRCULATING TANK. THE POND IS NOT MEANT TO EXCEED 12 SQUARE FEET IN DIAMETER. TROUT ARE ALSO ADAPT ABLE TO THE POND BUT IN LOWER STOCKING DENSITIES. DON'T BE LURED IN BY HIGH COST COMPLETE SYSTEMS FROM VARIOUS COMPANIES. YOU CAN SAVE BIG $$$$ BUILDING YOUR OWN SYSTEM.

**Note PVC runs around pond on ground-water leaves one end of pond and is returned in the other. Cage is made from PVC frame that floats, and 14" screen sewn together and screwed to PVC. Cage makes for ease of harvesting and better management. Wooden squares are made from 2X4, and are filled with 1/16" screen which is stapled to the frame. This filter needs to be periodically cleaned and will break down nitrogen in addition to filtering water. Pond is lined with 6 mil black plastic which can be held in place with rocks for a decorative look. Size of submersible pump is your choice depending on how may GPM’s you want to run through the filter. Stocking densities should be around 70-80 tilapia in the cage (3X3X3)

Do you have twist drills sitting in a box that are not being used because they need sharpening? Are there days when you cannot find a students who can properly sharpen twist drills and you find yourself sharpening twist drill to get work done in the shop? Well here is a quick method for students to sharpen your twist drills with a jig.

The Jig is made from any two hex nuts that you want to use. All you do is put two hex nuts together. spot weld and it's ready. See the illustration below:

The twist drill when properly sharpened will fit into the angle created by the two hex nuts. It's easy and a fast method to sharpen several twist drills.

CRANKSHAFT MENDER

STEPS TO BUILD MENDER:

1. Obtain a piece of hard wood approximately Ύ"X 16"
2. Drill hole in the center of material approximately 2" from end. Hole should be 1/16" larger than crankshaft diameter that is being worked on.
3. After hole is drilled, split your material length-wise with table saw.
4. Drill holes for tightening bolts ½" from each side of the hole
5. Place small piece of 320 plus grit Emory cloth around crankshaft and then loosely tighten bolts.
6. Place crankshaft in the lathe or drill press and make sure the frame of the lathe or drill press will hold the mender from turning full circle
7. Check crankshaft often to prevent removing too much material. To increase material removal just tighten bolts on mender.

ELECTRICAL WIRING WORK CENTER

Many of us are still using the wiring panels that were designed several years. The enclosed plans are for a size electrical work area. A weather head and main panel could be mounted on the back panel and then all types of circuits could be wired into it. One big advantage of this area is that students would have to drill and pull wire to boxes, which is not practical with the smaller panels. I would recommend 6' studs and 41 panel. Students could reach the ceiling with little or no trouble for lighting circuits. One of the big advantages is that the work area can be very easily folded together and stored in a small space. Casters could be added for ease of movement.

$1.75 VARIABLE ARC 10' BRICK LAYING FORM

I ran across the idea when a crew was installing a landscape in Gilbert. They were making a planter header that was connecting 2 perpendicular sidewalks. As many of you are well experienced in trying to follow a curved string line, ther has to be a better way A length of PVC works great .

Simply stake the PVC in place in the shape desired and start laying your mortar and brick. Remove the stakes as you go. Be sure to place a major portion of your stakes on the outer edges. This can also be done to varied lengths and shapes. The only draw backs would be when laying short arcs.

$.80 MULTI-PURPOSE STICK

1- 4' SCH 40 PVC

1 -15" Telephone wire ( any soft , coated)

I built several of these during our county sort and load hogs for the simple reasons, I did buy a bat, bats don't last, kids whip to hard, s are to slow and heavy, I don't own a cane yet, t needed to reach the back of the pens, etc. It w for sorting, pointing, will serve as a cane for ones in need.

4 minute directions: 1. Cut your PVC 2. 3/8" hole 1" from the top all of the way through 3. Cut your wire. 4. Run each end of the wire outsides of the pipe. 5. Tie a knot in each end and pull the knots inside.

SMALL GAS ENGINE DIP TANK

I got the idea fro this dip tank last summer when a local rancher brought six 7-hp engines that came off of a pivotal sprinkler to the school. The parts cleaning tank at the school would not begin to clean up these engines. I brought down my honey melting tank that I made from an old electric hot water heater. We put a cup of tide detergent in about 5 gallons of water, cooked the engines for about 5 hours and they came out like new. We just rinsed them in cold water. If you have an old hot water heater laying around, cut out the top, replace the element and/or thermostat but leave the insulation and sheet metal jacket in place. You’ll be amazed how well they work. I found that GRANGERS was a good place to get heating elements and thermostats.
