The Master Gardener Program administered by The
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Cochise County is a
partnership between Cooperative Extension and volunteers enrolled in the
program. Cooperative Extension trains, certifies, and supervises Master
Gardener volunteers who help Cooperative Extension provide research-based
information on home horticulture to the public that is endorsed by The
University of Arizona.
The Master Gardener Program is first and foremost
about volunteer service.
The purpose of the Master Gardener Program is to train
a knowledgeable corps of volunteers who can assist the County Extension
Agent in educating the public about gardening, food production,
landscaping, and environmental stewardship appropriate for Cochise County.
An individual who participates in and successfully
passes the 14-week course studying botany, soils, pest management,
vegetables, fruits and nuts, and other related topics becomes a Master
Gardener Associate.
A Master Gardener Associate is obligated to pledge 50
hours of approved volunteer service back to the Cooperative Extension
within one year of graduation. After completing the 50 hours of volunteer
service, a Master Gardener Associate becomes a Master Gardener. To remain
certified, Master Gardeners must complete 25 hours of approved volunteer
service and 12 hours of approved continuing education annually.
Upon completion of the Master Gardener course, each
graduate will receive a packet containing the Master Gardener Program
Policy, Memorandum of Agreement, and a volunteer form, which lists the
current volunteer opportunities available.
If you are unable to commit to the Master Gardener
program, but wish to obtain the information, you may purchase The Arizona
