PSC is on the WWW!

On July 19 the Plant Sciences Center launched it's new web site! The site's goal is to impart educational information about The Plant Sciences Task Force and Plant Sciences Center activities, and about Arizona's unique native plants. Each month profile and salvaging information for one of the plants held at the Center will be published. Many pictures of plants are on the site along with a history of how the Center was built. Also included is sponsorship information, PSC stories in the news, links, and sources where to purchase native seeds and plants. We hope you will find it useful!

Grassland Project

A combination of eight grasses native to Southeastern Arizona were planted in a field at the city waste water treatment facility totaling 27.5 acres. This is the first phase of a multi-phased project, covering more that 190 acres, converting former alfalfa fields to native grasses. The established native grasses will increase the recharge potential of the fields and provide a means of erosion control. The project will also provide a local seed bank for the other fields at the facility and for other regional field restoration projects.

For more information, contact Pat Bell, City of Sierra Vista, at 458-3315.

Landscape Project

The Task Force on Plant Sciences and the First Church of the Nazarene are teaming up on a demonstration garden for the church grounds. This project is a good way to show how salvaged plants can be used to beautify the landscape. The project will be on the church grounds near the intersection of El Camino Real and Foothills Drive.

BST Update

The Plant Sciences Center Staff conducted a one-year "check-up" on the salvaged plants that were planted on Buffalo Soldier Trail last July and September. The survival rate on the 315 plants that were relocated along the 5 mile stretch of highway was 84%
