The development of accurate real world data on crop pest losses and pesticide usage is important to the agricultural industry. Quantifiable measurements of pesticide use patterns, costs, target pests, and yield/quality losses due to key pests are our most objective tools for assessing change in our agricultural systems.
The Crop Pest Losses and Impact Assessment Work Group, funded through the Western IPM Center and UA Cooperative Extension, was formed to address this need. This group is made up of Extension entomologists, County Agents, Farm Advisors, Pest Control Advisors (PCAs), growers and ag industry representatives from Arizona and the low desert regions of California who have an interest in documenting pest losses and pesticide use in some of our major cropping systems, including head lettuce, melons and cotton.
Data are collected through a series of interactive clientele workshops. We work hard to enlist participation of representative PCAs and other stakeholders from throughout the appropriate growing regions, and follow-up with mail surveys to those who cannot attend, to develop the most complete and accurate dataset possible.
