Rammed earth construction is one of the oldest methods of wall construction being used today. Earth is an unprocessed, widely available building material with virtually no drawbacks associated with its harvesting or use. Rammed earth building saves construction and energy resources, does not pollute, and will last over one hundred years! Instructors from the School of Architecture at the University of Arizona show the step by step process used in building a rammed earth structure. They also demonstrate the advantages of rammed earth construction, and illustrate how the structure can represent considerable savings in utility costs for homeowners. If designed properly, rammed earth homes provide comfortable indoor temperatures while reducing energy costs.
