Defoliating Insect Images

Many species of insects feed on plant foliage. By feeding on leaves, defoliating insects decrease or eliminate a tree's photosynthetic capability, limiting growth. In severe cases of defoliation, tree mortality may result. Two of the most destructive defoliators are the Douglas-fir tussock moth and the western spruce budworm. Douglas-fir tussock moth larvae feed on new foliage as early instars, moving to older foliage as they mature. Complete defoliation and tree mortality can result in a single season from extreme tussock moth outbreaks. Severe attacks by spruce budworm over several seasons will cause complete defoliation, resulting in growth loss, top-kill, and eventual mortality. Symptoms of infestation vary with defoliating species, and may include the presence of larvae, and of egg masses on foliage or branches. Loss of foliage, holes in foliage, or skeletonizing of leaves are other indicators.
