The State 4-H Office and Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation are throwing a 4-H Centennial Gala to celebrate 4-H's 100th Anniversary, and will recognize over 20 outstanding alumni and volunteers and raise funds in support of Arizona's 4-H program. The Gala event will be held at the Omni Tucson National Resort on Saturday, October 12, 2002, with a reception at 6:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. You are invited to join us as we honor some of the outstanding individuals who have helped make this program the preeminent youth development organization in the state -- with over 74,000 members -- and largest youth movement in the nation -- involving over 7 million young people. Please do your best to help us promote this event and have a good turn out! The list of honorees include: Oliver Anderson, Marge Bayless, Everett* and Anita Brown, Jean Buzzard, Conner Byestewa*, Daisy Mae Cannon, Bart Cardon, Ed and Debbie Carpenter, Ernest Chilson*, Jim and Mary Faul, Everett* and Cecilia Grondin, Dorothy Johnson, Bud and Justine Lemke, Nick Lipinski, Emma Malone, Ken McDonald, Judi Mann, Bill Piper, Cyndi Roar, Emil Rovey*, and Donna Wahl (*denotes a posthumous award). 4-H and Sheely Farms are celebrating a partnership for 4-H's Centennial Year! For the past two years Maricopa County farmer Ken Sheely has partnered with Phoenix-area non-profit groups with a benefit corn maze. This year he has turned his 12-acre maze into a giant 4-H four-leaf clover to benefit Arizona's 4-H program and its 74,000 youth participants! Tickets for the maze, which will include a regular maze and "haunted" section for older adventurers, are available from participating 4-H clubs for only $7. In addition to admission to the maze, the tickets are good for discounts to Cold Stone Creamery, an oil change from S & S Tire, Fertizona products, and 10% off John Deere toy tractors from Arizona Machinery company. Each ticket also serves as an entry in our annual 4-H Benefit Raffle for a deluxe barbecue grill (secured by one of our Foundation trustees) from the BBQ Hut. Interested 4-H clubs can also sign up to work weekends in the maze while earning money (up to $600 a weekend) for their 4-H programs and activities! The maze will be open from October 4 until November 3, Friday nights from 5:00-11:00 pm, Saturday from 1:00-11:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00-7:00 pm. Make the trip to Phoenix and have some fun in the corn! It is worth the trip and a great way to support 4-H while having a fun time with family and friends!
