The copper industry is an integral component of southeastern Arizona. The process by which copper is extracted today by Phelps Dodge/Morenci involves a solution extraction and electrowinning process (SX/EW) in which water plays an integral role. The SX/EW process provides a very interesting educational opportunity that demonstrates the chemical properties of water and the importance of water quality from an industrial, domestic and agricultural perspective. Please click on each lesson plan for further details including materials, activity procedures, assessments, and references.
