Scholarly Interests and Activities

My current research examines the role of the marital relationship in the development of emotional competence in preschool children. I am currently collaborating with Drs. Wendy Gamble and Angela Taylor to study the socialization of emotions in a group of low-income Mexican-American and Anglo families. As part of the Parenting and Children's Emotion Project, we are interested in exploring how the coparenting and marital relationship and the overall emotional climate of the family contributes to children's ability to regulate their emotion and ultimately to their social behavior.

I am also interested in the effects of stress, coping, and adjustment on family relationships following divorce. The Arizona Divorced Parents Project used a stress and coping model to examine individual determinants of coparenting and the process by which parents develop a coparenting relationship following divorce. Both structured self-report and semi-structured interviews were used in this study.
