Gu is a second-year graduate student mentored by Dr. Stephen Russell. His research interests include the origins of sexual orientation and the relationship between childhood sex-typed behavior and adolescent and adulthood sexual orientation.
Gu is also interested in the broader impact of gender nonconformity on the mental health among sexual minorities and heterosexuals. Currently, Gu draws from nationally representative data in the United States (the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health) to investigate the role of gender-related traits and behaviors on the disparities in depression symptoms between sexual minorities and their heterosexual counterparts.
At the Frances McClelland Institute of Children, Youth, and Families, Gu is a research assistant working on the NIMH project Risk and Protective Factors for Suicide among Sexual Minority Youth. He was previously on the NIAAA project Adolescent Precursors to Financial Stress and Alcohol Problems in Emerging Adulthood.
