Colleagues report that from the time Dr. Stephen Russell set foot on the UA campus in 2004, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the University. Stephen is an exceptional scholar, but more than that he is a leader, devoted in his service to the school, to students, and to the community.
Stephen’s scholarship unquestionably brings distinction to the UA. He is an international leader in his field who has been widely published in some of the most respected academic journals as well as in media for a broader public audience. He also has compiled a strong record of extramural funding, has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally, and has been influential in the development of local and state laws and policies.
However, Stephen’s service to the University is not limited to the recognition his scholarship brings. He is also dedicated to providing leadership and direction for continued improvement to students and the University. He is recognized as an exceptional mentor for both undergraduate and graduate students, and in particular he is a champion for diversity and inclusion. He works tirelessly with the FCS Alumni Council to promote alumni engagement in the school. He has been an active member of numerous committees, boards, and task forces within the Norton School, CALS, the University, and the community, as well as at the national and international levels.
Singling out one of his activities, Stephen has been director of the Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth, and Families since 2007. In collaboration with his colleagues, he has led an effort to transform the institute by establishing key new initiatives, designing the institute’s organizational structure and physical layout, organizing two major conferences, nurturing donor relationships, and supporting faculty engagement in the institute. In recognition of his leadership, he was named interim director of the Norton School last year.
The Honorary Alumnus Award is given to non-alumni of the University of Arizona who have demonstrated continued interest in and exceptional loyalty and service to the University. For his service and commitment to the Norton School, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the University, the UA Alumni Association is proud to present Dr. Stephen Russell with the Honorary Alumnus Award.
