The Retailing and Consumer Sciences (RCSC) graduate program is one of only a few nationally recognized programs offering both master's and doctoral studies in retailing and consumer sciences. Both programs provide graduate students an opportunity to work closely with research faculty who guide students' academic and research efforts. Through graduate-level courses and research opportunities, both graduate programs of study provide an in-depth understanding of consumer behavior and retailing issues. Students gain analytical, managerial, and leadership skills in the field. Other benefits provided by each program include excellent career placement following graduation, opportunities to participate in professional research and trade conferences, and publication opportunities with research faculty. Funding for student research projects and graduate assistantships is also available from sources within the division, faculty research grants, and the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing.
M. S. Program
The master's program prepares students for careers in the retail industry, consumer-related retail research, and future graduate study. After completion of courses designed to build competencies in the research theories and principles on which retail strategies are based, students conduct either an applied or a basic research project. The program culminates in the completion of a Master's Report from this project.
Ph.D. Program
Students earning a doctorate aspire to faculty positions in higher education or research positions in government and private industry. The Ph.D. program is designed to provide a foundation in research theory, research methods, and advanced statistical procedures in retailing and consumer sciences. To broaden their theoretical perspective and strengthen job opportunities, doctoral students also earn a minor in another discipline, such as marketing, sociology, gerontology, psychology, or communications.
