RCSC faculty conduct basic research leading to better understanding of a diverse range of topics affecting consumer and family decision-making. Results from these studies help contribute to new knowledge that can impact academia, business practitioners, and individual consumers. Some RCSC faculty specializes in research on retailing topics involving consumer behavior in the contexts of store patronage, retail services, retail technology, multichannel retailing, financial retail services, and retailing in diverse cultures. Research on retailing topics also extends to retailers’ strategy decisions involving buyer-seller relationships, private branding, foreign market entry, environmental marketing, corporate reputation, and social responsibility. Other faculty conducts research on consumers’ financial decisions including the financial behaviors and decision processes of adolescents.

RCSC faculty engage in Applied Consumer Research Experience (ACRE) projects, which provide RCSC students with the opportunity to work with industry partners and faculty mentors on consumer research aimed at answering business questions with academic rigor. Interested faculty meets with organizational representatives to define the scope and depth of the research question(s) before recruiting students to work on their consulting team. The organization usually provides funding for the ACRE project through gifts in support faculty research.
