FSHD Student Services
How are we Different and Similar to Other Departments (e.g., Psychology, Sociology)?
Family Studies and Human Development is a unique major that explores both families and individuals. On the Human Development side, students learn about the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of individuals from birth until death. But, unlike Psychology, which is only the study of the individual, FSHD explores relationships, families, and the contexts that influence human development. It is a diverse, interdisciplinary major that is part Psychology (individual), Sociology (groups), and Anthropology (culture).
It is a great major for anyone who is interested in a career in social work, counseling, education, or any other career that involves helping people! (Click here for a list of possible careers).
