    14. Master Home Garden Tour , Saturday April 8th - Top

If you want to get some great landscape and home gardening ideas, then come on the Master Gardener home garden tour to be held Saturday, April 8th. The tour will feature the home gardens and landscapes of five Tucson Master Gardeners and the demonstration gardens at the Pima County Cooperative Extension Center.

All the gardens on the tour are planned, planted and maintained by the host Master Gardeners. They will be present to answer questions, along with other Master Gardener volunteers.

A Master Gardener is a volunteer who has been certified by the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension after completing 50 hours of training and passing an examination. Many of the gardeners are experts in their own right, on various aspects of gardening; such as roses, vegetables, herbs, cacti and succulents, and container plants.

There will be something of gardening interest to all attending the tour. You’ll see lots of desert landscaping with unique varieties of cacti and succulents. Excellent examples of water harvesting and other conservation techniques for desert gardens will be featured. A hummingbird and butterfly garden using native plants will be another one of the tour highlights. The Hillson garden, recently featured in the Star Home Section, has one of the best collections of nectar and larva plants and is visited by some 50 species of butterflies.

One of the best ways to flowers and vegetables here in the desert is in raised bed gardens. Metal stock tanks, adobe block, stacked stone, landscape timbers are just a few of the examples of raised bed gardens on the tour. There’s even a salad bowl made from an old satellite dish!

Everyone likes to plant in containers, and our tour features several beautiful patio and container gardens using many unique pots and unusual container plants. You can get ideas on types of dwarf fruit trees, summer flowers, cacti and succulents, and special accent plants that grow and look great in pots. Whimsical garden art including; mirrored garden walls, rainbow globes, step-stool plant stands, and penny-clad bowling balls will also be on display.

The gardens will be full of color with spring wildlfowers, desert adapted perrenials, and beds of annual flowers. It’s also a perfect time to see many interesting varieties of cacti in full bloom.

The tour will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8th and will include the home gardens and landscapes of five Tucson Master Gardeners. Also included will be the demonstration gardens at the University of Arizona / Pima County Cooperative Extension Center and a home demonstration orchard on the grounds of the Campus Agriculture Center. The host gardeners and other Master Gardeners will be on hand at each stop to answer questions and provide information.

Tickets are $8.00 for adults. Children 12 years and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets may be purchased at the Pima County Cooperative Extension Center, 4210 N. Campbell Avenue from 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday. Tickets are also on sale at Rillito Nursery, Harlow Gardens and Civano Nursery. For more information call 626-5161.
