- 8. Arizona citrus crop devastated by recent freeze
- Arizona Daily Star Industry News & Notes
January 18, 2007
Recent freezing temperatures have destroyed most of the remaining citrus crop in Arizona, the Arizona Department of Agriculture said Wednesday. The agency estimated that 75 percent to 90 percent of all unpicked citrus in Yuma County has been destroyed by the cold weather. About 25 percent of the state's lemon crop is still in the fields, and more than 75 percent of grapefruit, tangelos and oranges remain unpicked, the department said. Last season, 23,500 acres of citrus crops was planted in Arizona, with an estimated value of $46 million, according to federal statistics. Although at risk, lettuce and other produce are not as vulnerable to the recent cold front as citrus, the Arizona Agriculture Department said. It will take a few days to determine the impact on produce, because lettuce and other types of produce are able to heal if temperatures stabilize, the agency said.
