Ian Barnes, of the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in the United Kingdom and a frequent contributor to BENE, the Biodiversity and Ecosystems NEtwork e-mail listserver, let fellow subscribers know about a new desertification resource on the Internet:

Announcing the Desertification Information Service

The World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) would like to announce the launch of the Desertification Information Network. WCMC, in conjunction with da Vinci (Belgium) and SCOT Conseil (France), aim to provide information products to a wide range of users in the field of desertification. These include references to projects, organisations and environmental data sets. This is possible by connecting through a WWW server (at http://www.wcmc.org.uk/~dynamic/desert) and/or a listserver (address below).

The network takes advantage of the Geo-Management System of da Vinci, which allows users to conduct queries either by form or through a map interface.

For users unable to access information via WWW, a data repository is being set up on the desert-l listserver for users directly involved in desertification studies; you are invited to join the desert-l listserver by the following means:

E-mail message to: listproc@wcmc.org.uk
Message:subscribe desert-l your name

Note: no subject is needed. Listserver details and commands will be sent to you on subscription.

The Desertification Information Network is being funded as a pilot project by the Centre for Earth Observation of the European Community. We would welcome any comments to enhance this service.

Regards,
Ian Barnes
